These Google notifier applications checks your Gmail account automatically for new emails without opening the browser.
The Gmail Notifier is an application that alerts you when you have new Gmail messages. Gmail Notifier is for windows. For Mac the Gmail notifier is “Google Notifier“.
The Gmail Notifier displays an Icon in the system tray. It will check for new messages in your account periodically. If there is any new message it shows you the the mail subject, senders and snippets.
The Google Notifier is an application that shows you alerts in your menu bar, so you can see when you have new Gmail messages. Google Notifier also shows the upcoming Google Calendar (Read: Schedule & backup Google calendar) events without having to open a web browser.
The Gmail notifier automatically check for new messages every two minutes. It shows a snippet of text from up to 30 unread messages. You can also set a sound to indicate when you have new mail. The Gmail Notifier allows you to make Gmail your default email application.
If you are a mac user the the Google Notifier gives you some extra features. Apart from new email alerts Google Notifier allows you to make Gmail your default email program, it shows you upcoming events from your Google Calendar and also allows you to create a new Google Calendar event.
Gmail Notifier and Privacy concerns
When you click on “Check Mail” option Gmail Notifier prompts to enter Gmail username and password. When you select “Remember my password” option upon logging in to the Gmail Notifier, Windows stores your information in Protected Storage which is the same location Internet Explorer stores its passwords. It stores password in encrypted form and cannot be accessed by others.
Also Gmail notifier does not store any mail snippets permanently in the system , but uses the temporary memory on your computer.
Patch for HTTPS Settings
For more security you can enable to use HTTPS in Gmail. If you have enabled “Always use https” in Gmail, then you need to install a patch for the Notifier to work. It is a zip file and you need to double-click the notifier_https.reg file. Click yes when you’re asked to confirm if you want to add the information to the registry. Once the patch is installed, you need to restart the notifier. In case you change the settings later you need to use the “notifier_https_undo.reg” file to undo it.
