Google desktop notifications for Gmail emails and chat messages is now available for Google Chrome Browser. Chrome desktop notifications feature for Gmail is recently added in Gmail. This is another useful and interesting feature from Gmail.
Google launched the HTML5 Gmail desktop notifications which display pop-ups whenever a chat message or new email arrives. This is really useful since it gives a proper way of notifying you whenever there is a new email or chat message. We all like the email notification of Microsoft Outlook. Now similar feature to Google will make the Gmail service class apart from other mail services.
But remember this feature as of now available only if you are using Google Chrome browser. As mentioned at Gmail Blog “This functionality is currently only available for people using Google Chrome, but we’re working to make notifications part of the standard Web platform “.
This Web Notification is an implementation of W3C Web Notifications specification . This specification provides an API to generate notifications to alert users outside of the web page like in a a corner of the user’s display or the he “home” screen of a mobile device.
How to enable Gmail Desktop notifications for emails and chat messages
You can enable Gmail Desktop notifications by following few steps.
- Click the settings link on the right side of your Gmail window.
- Scroll Down and find ‘Desktop Notifications‘ section.
- There are two option here. You can enable chat notification and/or mail notifications. See below.
- If you have enabled Priority Inbox, then you can also set “Notification only for important mails” option.
This adds one more user friendly feature to Gmail.
