The method of Guessing author’s gender by analysing the words used by the author was developed by researchers from the Illinois Institute of Technology and Bar-Ilan University in Israel. They have identified several classes of simple lexical and syntactic features that differ substantially according to author gender are identified, both in fiction and in non-fiction documents. According to the document “In particular, we find significant differences between male- and female-authored documents in the use of pronouns and certain types of noun modifiers: although the total number of nominals used by male and female authors is virtually identical, females use many more pronouns and males use many more noun specifiers.”

The Gender Genie is one such service. The Gender Genie uses a simplified version of an algorithm mentioned above. The genie works best on texts of more than 500 words. It gives the results by analysing the words you provided. The Feminine Keywords and Masculine Keywords are identified to give the results.
Another such service is the Gender Guesser. This tool also attempts to determine an author’s gender based on the words used and follows the same algorithm. This service evaluates the submitted text based on two types of writing: formal and informal. Formal writing includes fiction and non-fiction stories, articles, and news reports. Informal writing includes blog and chat-room text. You need to use at least 300 words to get a good result.
