But here is a great utility from Sysinternals which actually uses uses a Windows desktop object for each desktop.That means the virtual desktops created by Desktops are real desktops windows.
The utility is called Desktops and the current version is Desktops v1.02.
Desktops Version v1.02 is a freeware and allows users to organize and split their applications to a maximum of four virtual desktops.
Users can play movie on first desktop , can browse globinch in desktop 2, use ms word on third desktop and read email on fourth desktop.

Desktops does not provide a way to close a desktop, because that would result in orphaned windows and processes. Since Desktops uses windows desktop objects separate Explorer process must run on each desktop to provide a taskbar and start menu.So there is no way to delete a desktop object and you need to logoff to exit the desktops.
