It would be nice if your computer alerts you that you have a USB drive connected to your computer when you try to log off, lock or shutdown the computer. This will help you to remove USB drive safely and you will never forget your  USB drive  or USB stick.  USB Alert a free utility does exactly that.
USB Alert is free for personal use. USB Alert warns the user when loging off, shutting down or locking the PC. (It skips cardreaders without a memorycard.) USB Alert shows a list of USB sticks plugged into the PC. The user can browse the USB stick or even eject (safely remove) the USB stick.

USB Alert available as portable and installable versions.
Portable version is more usable because it can be copied to the USB drive itself. The portable executable and its autorun.inf file should be copied to the root folder on the USB stick. Once this is done the  Windows AutoPlay feature allows you to launch USB Alert as soon as you insert the stick to USB slot.

One point to note here is that In Windows 7 autorun is disabled by default, for external drives due to security reasons. You can enable Autorun in Windows 7 from control panel. If this is not possible then the only option is to install the version of USB Alert in the Windows 7 machine.
