It is not uncommon that people face problems because of an outdated anti-virus program and want to check whether a particular attachment file or system file is infected by virus or not.
It would be great if there is a service that analyzes suspicious files and facilitates the quick detection of viruses, worms, Trojans, and all kinds of malware detected by anti-virus engines.
VirusTotal is offering exactly that.They mentioned in the web site that they use multiple anti-virus engines to scan infected files and more over it is a free service.
There are different options available at VirusTotal to send file to scan. You can either upload the file from your local machine and get the result back.Another option is to send the suspicious file through mail.
To send a file through mail to VirusTotal you need to create a new message with scan@virustotal.com as destination address of your email.The file must not exceed 20 MB in size.You will receive an email with a report of the file analysis.
Also they provide a tool ‘VirusTotal Uploader‘ which enables you to directly send files from your system using the context menu.
This service is really useful if you are facing any issues with your anti-virus installation and you suspect that any file attachment of file is infected with virus.
