MSConfig, or Microsoft System Configuration Utility,  is a utility to troubleshoot the Windows startup process.This is called System Configuration in Windows Vista and Windows 7.
The MSConfig can be used to modify programs that run at startup ,control the windows services as well as to edit certain windows configuration files.
You can also launch System restore utility from MSConfig utility.There is a button available in the General screen to launch the System Restore.


Be careful when you use the MSConfig tool.As stated in the microsoft documentation site Microsoft strongly recommends that you do not use System Configuration Utility to modify the Boot.ini file on your computer without the direction of a Microsoft support professional. Doing so may render your computer unusable.

How to run the MSConfig tool

To Use MSConfig you must be logged on as an administrator or a member of the Administrators group in order to complete this procedure.
Msconfig.exe can be started from command prompt. Go to start menu ,open a new run dialog and type MSConfig.
Th above step will launch the MSConfig tool as shown below.

Files that can be edited through MSConfig include AUTOEXEC.BAT, CONFIG.SYS, WIN.INI, SYSTEM.INI on Windows 9x systems, and WIN.INI, SYSTEM.INI and BOOT.INI on Windows NT systems prior to Windows Vista.
MSConfig is bundled with all Microsoft Windows operating systems since Windows 98 except Windows 2000.
