What is IMEI number?
Every phone manufactured comes with a a unique 15-digit IMEI code that identifies a mobile. 

IMEI Number is International Mobile Equipment Identity number is a number unique to every GSM and WCDMA and iDEN mobile phone in the world.(MEID-Mobile Equipment Identifier for CDMA).


How do we check the IMEI number of our handset?
The IMEI number will be displayed on the screen of the phone by entering *#06# into the keypad.
In GSM (Global System for Mobile communications) mobiles IMEI number can be used to track/identify valid devices and therefore can be used to stop a stolen phone from accessing the network.


The stolen mobile can be blacklisted using the IMEI number.To blacklist the mobile handset using IMEI number contact the local operator with a request that it should be blocked.
Low end Chinese mobiles and IMEI Number.
Majority of the low end Chinese phones that have flooded the market do not have IMEI number.Government of IndiaDepartment of Telecom (DoT)  blocked cell phones which do not bear the International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI) number. Even mobile phones that have all zeroes or no zero in their IMEI code will be barred.
Some Chinese handsets are having proper IMEI number and those will not be barred.
Since low cost Chinese mobiles has many features that only high end mobiles used to have,millions of people bought these handsets.
Places like Kerala in India is flooded with IMEI number less chinese mobiles and the users will have to take necessary steps to ensure that the mobile phone handset he is carrying should have proper IMEI number.
